Erie County Juvenile Detention Center (New York)

The Erie County Juvenile Detention Center has room for 64 individuals. There are two options available to youths that have gotten into trouble and are going through the correctional programs. There is secure detention and non-secure detention.

Secure Detention

Youths that have committed crimes before the age of 16, as well as Juvenile Offenders that are age 13-15 and have been charged with serious crimes, are housed in Secure detention houses. They can get educational services as well as mental and physical health services while they are there. The detention center is normally a temporary facility for youngsters that are awaiting their court date or waiting for their sentencing and availability at a more permanent facility. Youths can be sent to this facility by being arrested, an outstanding warrant or a family court order. If a youngster is arrested when Family Court is not in session, they can be brought directly to the secure detention facility. If this happens the following will occur:

  • The parent/guardian is notified immediately
  • The physical and mental states of the individual are immediately assessed so that everyone can be safe
  • The individuals will be taken downtown to the Family Court Building the next business day
  • Parents should meet their child at the Family Court Building for the court appearance
  • The youth will then be released after the initial hearing or sent to the secure facility until a court date

Many studies have shown that youthful offenders don’t turn into adult offenders if they go through programs in these secure detention centers.

When should you worry about your child’s behavior?

The best thing a parent can do is try to identify when your child may be getting into trouble before he gets arrested and ends up at the mercy of the criminal justice system. Here are some behaviors you should look for that may signal that you need to get some help before it is too late:

  • If the school is frequently complaining about your child’s behavior
  • If your child is consistently misbehaving and defiant at home
  • If your child is being abusive to younger siblings or lying often even if you try to stop him with discipline
  • If your child tries to set fires and plays with matches
  • If your school says that your kid’s behavior is causing his grades to drop
  • If your child is hanging around with friends that show bad behavior
  • If your child has been acting out for more than six months

What should you do?

  • Try to set limits and consequences for bad behavior. Ground the child or take away other privileges
  • Identify what behaviors you are concerned about and see if the school or others agree with you
  • Do not use physical punishment
  • Reward your child when he is behaving well
  • Talk to a counselor for further advice
