Visitation procedures at Marion County Jail

Visitation procedures vary among different facilities. At the Marion County Jail it is necessary to make an appointment to visit someone. You can make an appointment by calling 317-639-9300 between the hours of 11:30 am and 2:30 pm. The appointments come on a first-come first serve basis so call early in the timeframe. There are certain guidelines you need to follow once you arrive at the facility:

  • You are not allowed to leave once you enter or your visit will be cancelled.
  • You must be subjected to a complete search that may include K-9 dogs. If there is any contraband of any kind found on your person your visit will be cancelled. You are not allowed to take anything with you into your visit.
  • If you need to cancel a visit for any reason you must call at least 2 hours ahead of the scheduled visit time. If you fail to show up without cancelling two times during a month you won’t be able to visit again for 30 days. The upsetting part for the inmate is that if you cancel, it still counts towards their total of two visits per week.
  • Dress appropriately for your visits. The staff has the right to refuse anyone that is dressed inappropriately. Dress like you were going to a job interview or visiting your grandparents. If you have any questions as to what you might wear you can call the main number and receive guidance.

Attorneys have different visitation schedules. They can visit anytime between 7:00 am – 11:15 am, 1:30 pm – 5:15 pm, and 7:30 pm – 9:30 pm on any day. Attorneys are allowed to visit as often as they please as long as they present a Certificate of Good Standing by the Supreme Court. Inmates cannot receive anything from an attorney while visiting unless they have specific permission from the Jail Supervisor.

You inmate would love money put on their account for commissary

Inmates are stripped of any items of convenience once they are incarcerated. Ordinary snacks and toiletry items become a high priority for someone in jail. The only way they have access to these items is if they have money on their individual accounts so they can purchase items from commissary. These items are delivered a couple of times a week and all inmates look forward to this break in the normal grind of prison life. They would really appreciate you putting money on their account so they can have some of the items they enjoyed while they were out of prison. If you want to put money on an inmate’s account you can do it in one of two ways:

  1. Deposit cash into the kiosk’s available in the lobby of the Marion County Jail from 7 am – 6 pm daily.
  2. You can send a money order to the facility as long as it is a Postal Prepaid Money Order or any other that is accredited. You must make the money order out to Marion County Jail Commissary. You must also include the following:
    1. Inmate’s complete name
    2. Inmate’s date of birth
    3. Inmate’s cell block and unit number
    4. Inmate’s gallery number or ID number

If all of this information is not on the front of the money order, it will be returned to the sender. You can send the money order to:

Inmate Account Manager
Inmate’s Name and ID number
Cell Housing Number and Cell Block if known
Marion County Jail
40 S. Alabama Street
Indianapolis, IN 46204

If you need to pay by credit card, you can call 1-888-604-7888.
