The Aaron Cohn Regional Youth Detention Center has room for 64 juveniles. They can house 16 females and 48 males. The Center serves multiple counties including Muscogee, Harris, Marion, Macon, Schley, Chattahoochee, Meriwether, Stewart, Talbot, Pike, Troup and Webster.
This facility houses juveniles that are waiting for their case to go to trial or have been found guilty of a crime. It also is a place where the youngsters are helped while they are waiting to be put into another secure facility or program. While at this facility, the juvenile can get multiple programs including:
- Counseling services
- Education
- Medical services
- Art, craft, recreation
The center’s basic care includes medical and dental care as well as clothing and meals as necessary.
Visitation and other information
Only parents and guardians may visit their child at the Center. You cannot bring any type of food into the facility for your child. You can purchase food from the vending machines so that your child can eat it while you are there. You child can use the phone once when he arrives at the center and after that, he can use the phone only once per week. He is allowed to write as many postcards as he wishes during the times that he is allowed but only 2 can be sent per week unless you pay extra for postage. Understand that your child needs to focus on the reasons he is at the center and get involved with the programs that will make him recover and give him the tools necessary to function properly in the outside world.
The Good Behavior Bill
This bill has been developed for youth that have decided that they want to make something of their lives and are willing to demonstrate the willingness to do what is necessary to rehabilitate as well as take responsibility for their own actions. They may be able to ask the courts for a reduced sentence and an early release if they can do the following:
- Must be in confinement for at least 12 months
- When they are up for review they must be on gold card status
- The cannot have been found guilty of any Class B violations in the past 6 months or been found guilty of any Class C violations at all
- Has progressed substantially in any treatment programs they have been advised to take
- Has completed substance abuse treatment if necessary
- Has completed their GED if appropriate or been attending and excelling at whatever school level they are currently working on
- Has developed a Restitution Plan if necessary
The juvenile or their parent can file a motion with the Department of Juvenile Justice court that confined the youth in the first place. If the motion is denied, you can try again in another 12 months. It is important that you do what is necessary if you are planning for an early release.
